A terrifying experience on vacation in the Amazon won’t keep me from traveling.

Even before COVID-19 upended the world, many people were fearful of traveling long distances because of terrorist attacks, airplane crashes and other disasters. Even my husband had grown skittish. That’s why we opted for a leisurely luxe cruise along the Amazon River in Peru. What could possibly go wrong? Plenty, as it turned out.

The very first night two people died from an onboard electrical fire, and our understanding of what it means to be “safe” was changed forever.
