1872 Inn: Rustic Elegance at Yellowstone’s Doorstep
Just outside the western entrance of Yellowstone National Park is the new 1872 Inn in West Yellowstone. The outside resembles a weathered barn, but that’s both deceiving and deliberate. On the inside is a handsome adults-exclusive lodge rich in luxurious appointments and sophisticated flair. The hotel was named in honor of the year the city was founded.

The lobby decor is lavished with natural resources of the region. Rustic woods line the floors and walls. Cast-off antlers are fashioned into light fixtures, artwork and fruit bowls. A see-through stone fireplace and Native American-style rugs define cozy seating areas.

The two-story hotel has a fitness center, sauna and computer station for guest use but no elevator. A buffet breakfast, including scrambled eggs and meats, is complimentary when you book direct. Wi-fi also is complimentary but may be limited due to the remote location. (Note: I had no problems accessing wi-fi.)

Each of the 18 guest rooms is furnished with locally handmade furniture, from the headboard to the desk chair. Mine was Room 9 on the second floor. Like all rooms, it had a fireplace with an easy on-off switch, large-screen television, leather-upholstered lounge chair, desk, bar fridge, coffee station, and suede-like curtains. The king-size bed was outfitted with a pillow menu and tribal blanket. Artistic prints of bison and aspen trees adorned the walls.

The bathroom was a total wow. It’s definitely designed for couples. The oversized shower has dual rain-heads, and the vanity has dual sinks. There are two waffle-weave bathrobes and his-and-hers toiletries: Guild + Pepper for him, Poggesi for her.
The 1872 Inn closes during the winter, so check availability.
